    - Leave tips for others.

    DON’Ts
    - Don’t check in when you’re not at a place.
    - Don’t create venues that do not exist.

    - Don’t leave tips with inappropriate language or negativity directed at another user.
    - Don’t spam via tips.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
For all of you that have gotten the notice from 4sqr that starts off with:

    Hello __________,

We noticed that you seem to really love foursquare (good!), but our system has detected that your check-ins don’t follow our guidelines (bad!). Foursquare is meant for checking in to real places where you’re actually spending time, not just checking in to unlock badges. We recently detected that you checked in fraudulently through third-party services, like _________________ Fake check-ins and tips ruin the experience for others. For a guide to what’s okay and what’s not, take a look at our House Rules.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
Basically what it comes down to is that they noticed that you are checkin in using "_____(insert 3rd party app here)_____" in your case. Under their new app rules any app that does not report the correct location is no longer allowed. And all checkins using any app that does not report location correctly will be flagged along with any user that uses that app.

As it states in their letter "- We currently do not flag accounts or check-ins that use the mobile web, as those check-ins are not included in our venue stats, venue specials, and social game elements. (This means that they do not negatively impact other members of the foursquare community.)" basically saying without actually saying that if you are going to jump do it this way.

This notice has been sent to people using apps like pocketcrowd as well as people using gps spoofs. If 4sqr detects that you are somehow giving them a false location you will recieve this letter.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
Here are the articles that cover the new requirements from 4sqr about location reporting from 3rd party applications if you are intreasted in reading more about it

If you apply to be a super user now and are in violation of any of the 4sqr house rules or if you are a "jumper" here is the email they will send you:

    Hi Your name here,

We're sorry to report back that your request for an upgrade to Superuser has been denied. Don't fret! We still love you! This probably only happened because you didn't answer enough quiz questions correctly, or you're too new to foursquare Less often this happens because your application was incomplete, too many of the edits you suggested were rejected by other Superusers, you've created too many low-quality venues, you have too many rapid-fire check-ins, or you haven't been following our House Rules. You're welcome to apply again in 30 days. In the meantime, study up and be a model foursquare user!
    Good luck!
    team foursquare
  • martamarta September 2011
If we (jumper) use house rules after we received the above answer from 4sq team about SU application for at least 30 days, can our request again be agreed?
  • JR1JR1 September 2011
@marta You can try. I wouldnt be suprised when they say no. But I have not tried it myself yet. I can say that they still deny people that have never jumped at all so keep that in mind when applying. I think it just comes down to who at 4sqr recieves the application and how they feel at that moment. I say that because I have a personal 4sqr acct (have an acct for badge collecting and several others for testing badges) that I do not use for jumping and never have (every checkin was done from a gps smartphone). That acct has been active for a long time and every time I apply to be an SU with that acct they still deny me. But give it a shot if you want and let us know if it works out for you.

  • JR1JR1 June 2011
If anyone who reads this is part of a company or brand that wants to get their own 4sqr badge here is the info on how to do it.

The link for the badge application page is: https://foursquare.com/business/brands

    Badge Criteria:
1.Earned reward. People should be excited to earn your badge. The badge alone isn’t the reward; it’s the journey that your followers took culminating in “unlocking” your badge that counts most.
2.Do it again. Unlocking badges should reward a behavior pattern from your customers, not just one action. Getting a badge just for showing up is too easy to be fulfilling.
3.Relevant to lots of followers. Your badge should be unlockable by a wide audience; it should appeal to users in Kansas and California, not just New York or Paris.
4.Plan ahead. Badges take time. From a technical perspective, we need a considerable amount of time to get a good badge into the system.

Here is the official word from 4sqr as how to get a partner badge. I sent them a request for the information and they actually sent it to me. So for anyone who is intreasted in knowing how the process goes or if you run a brand and are thinking about getting your own badge here you go:

Thanks for your interest in creating your own Partner Badge on foursquare!

Foursquare Partner Badges usually take 6-8 weeks from inception to launch of a campaign.

Partner Badges are currently the only thing we charge for. Everything else within foursquare is free right now. The cost is $25K per month with a 3-month minimum commitment. Badge ideas are subject to our product team's approval to ensure that the campaign makes sense for your brand and ours and to ensure that there is a cohesive story and unlock requirements. Due to the volume of requests that we get and the vetting process that all badge ideas undergo, very few ideas are approved.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
    We look for things like:

+ Ubiquity of unlock locations - typically at least nationwide in the
US, better yet available all around the world
+ Have some special reward or unique redemption opportunity for those
    that unlock the badge
+ A clear story arc of who should/can unlock the badge and what they have to do
+ A promotional plan to understand how discovery of the badge will occur

If this seems appropriate for your brand, please fill out this form http://bit.ly/9yhdgk to tell us a bit more about your organization and your idea for a Partner Badge. All badge ideas will be carefully considered, however due to the overwhelming demand we will not be able to respond directly to every inquiry in a timely manner, if at all. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

If you have any questions in the meantime please let me know.

    Thanks for checking in,
    team foursquare :)

Q: Is there a limit on how many foursquare friends I can have?
A: You can only be friends with 1000 people on foursquare

Q: Is there a limit on how many brands i can follow on foursquare?
A: You can only follow 1000 brands on foursquare

Q: How do I delete friends or brands i am following?
A: Go to https://foursquare.com/manage/friends , click on Friends or following, and then click on the grey x button that appears (on the right) when you hover over your friend's or the brands name.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
Q: What does the "rapid fire" check-in message mean?
A: Foursquare thinks that you're checking in more times than seems reasonable in a short period of time (or a lot of venues in a 24-hour period)

Q: What are the basic guidelines for checking in?
A: Check in when you go to a place and spend some time there.
Only check into a place that you are actually at (and not places you're just walking by).
Only check in or add places that other people would actually want to check into

Q: What does the message "Oops, it looks like you're a little far away" mean?
A: Foursquare thinks you're too far away from the venue you are checking in to based on 1) venue location, 2) venue radius, 3) device location, and 4) device accuracy
  • nikspeednikspeed April 10
btw... tested it yesterday... 4sq increased the number of maximum check ins per 24hours from 30 to 40
and you can definitely check in more often than 3 times in 15 min, as the rule was once set up. now 5 times in 15 minutes should work fine
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
    Q: How do I delete a check-in?
A: Goto https://foursquare.com/user/history Mouse over the check-in and you'll see a small "x" to the left of it. Click the x to delete the check-in. If you delete a check-in that was associated with unlocking a badge, you'll lose the badge!

Q: How can I delete my home from foursquare?
A: Email 4sqr @ privacy@foursquare.com in the email please include the The foursquare.com URL of the venue page & If you know who created your home as a venue, please send us their profile URL, Twitter username, or their full name and location.

Also please note that if you created the venue page for your home yourself and you categorized it as a home, you'll be able to delete it yourself. Go to its venue page at foursquare.com, click "Edit venue" (located below the map), and then click the trash can to remove the venue from the 4sqr database.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
Q: How do I find the venue URL?
A: By searching for the venue name on foursquare.com, clicking on the venue, and copying the URL in the search bar of your browser. Foursquare venue urls that look like this: https://foursquare.com/venue/77863

    Q: What is a tag?
A: A one word description or a short phrase that provides information about that venue

Q: Why can't I find this venue on my device?
A: After searching for it by name and still not finding the venue it may have not been created yet. Please feel free to add the venue then checkin to it.

Q: If I unfollow a brand i had to follow to get a badge will i loose the badge once i unfollow the brand?
A: At this time no you will not loose the badge if you unfollow the brand.
  • JR1JR1 June 2011
Q: What is the style guide for adding and editing venues?
A:-Always use correct spelling and capitalization.
-For chains or venues with multiple locations, you no longer need to add a location suffix. So "Starbucks" or "Apple Store" is fine (instead of "Starbucks - Queen Anne" or "Apple Store - Uptown").
-When possible stick with abbreviations: "Ave." instead of "Avenue", "St." instead "Street", etc.
-Cross Street should be abbreviated like one of the following: at Main St. (for venues on a corner) btwn 2nd & 3rd Ave. (for venues in the middle of a block)
-Cross Street should not repeat the name of the street in the address. If the venue is on Main St., the cross street should be "at 2nd Ave."
-State and province names should be abbreviated.
-When in doubt, please format venue addresses according to local postal guidelines.

  • JR1JR1 July 2011
Forusquare redid 4sqr mobile today removing the shout option from the list of things you can do(option #3). Now you can only shout on 4sqr mobile with a checkin. For all of you who jump and use the shout trick to not have to consider travel time that will no longer work. From now on when jumping using 4sqr mobile you will need to conside travel time. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

In a bit of good news for any college looking to get involved with the 4sqr Universities 2.0 program:

4sqr has announced that the Universities 2.0 program badges will be offered at NO COST to colleges wanting to participate in this program.

"In the past a badge was an expensive option to have created, however Foursquare says that with the number of students requesting badges for their schools they will begin offering them to universities at no cost." http://bloggingtoday.org/foursquare-expands-“college-badge”-program-removes-badge-fee/
  • JR1JR1 August 2011
Please note that using anything other then a 3rd party app that reports ur actual location or 4sqr mobile may result in your 4sqr acct being flagged. 4sqr has been cracking down on this alot more lately so if you do use any 3rd party apps that do not report your real location to 4sqr dont be suprised if your acct gets flagged and you get a message from 4sqr.
  • JR1JR1 September 2011
4sqr today chenged the venue links. Now when you goto a venue it no longer has the venue number in the link.

    for example:
this is how a venue link used to look:
    https://foursquare.com/venue/110555

this is how that same venue link looks now:
    https://foursquare.com/v/andy-warhol-museum/4aa1679cf964a5207f4020e3

the mobile venue link now looks like this:
    https://foursquare.com/mobile/venue/4aa1679cf964a5207f4020e3

This does not change much just makes it a bit harder to get the venue to pull up on 4sqr mobile when using regular 4sqr on a pc. Instead of just typing in /mobile into the link after .com you now have to delete the /v/venue-name/ and add in /mobile/venue/ in it's place to get the venue to pull up on 4sqr mobile. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up of the change before you tried to change a venue over to 4sqr mobile and it did not work.
  • HarjifangkiHarjifangki September 2011
Or, you can add "mobile" just before the /v/
    So, it'll be
    https://foursquare.com/mobile/v/andy-warhol-museum/4aa1679cf964a5207f4020e3
  • JR1JR1 September 2011
Exactly.. Thanks for posting that.. When they origionally did the changeover you could not just add in /mobile before the /v . They went back a few days later and fixed the issue. I updated the post in the other discussion but not this one. So thanks again :D
  • HarjifangkiHarjifangki September 2011
    You're very welcome JR1 :)
  • BeerknurdBeerknurd September 2011
I always put a m before the foursquare domain like this. That works too.

    https://m.foursquare.com/v/andy-warhol-museum/4aa1679cf964a5207f4020e3

it converts the address to this after you click it.

    https://foursquare.com/mobile/v/andy-warhol-museum/4aa1679cf964a5207f4020e3

It also works for these venue links too. https://m.foursquare.com/venue/110555
  • HarjifangkiHarjifangki September 2011
Nice! That one's definitely simpler than adding "mobile" before the /v
    Thanks Beerknurd!
  • BeerknurdBeerknurd September 2011
    You're welcome!!
  • JR1JR1 September 2011
Adding your home on foursquare has always been a dicey proposition in terms of privacy. Once you became mayor it showed on your profile with a pin pointing directly to it. If you added the address, it showed up right there on the page, making it easy for anyone to find exactly where you lived. Even if you took the trouble to create the location away from your home, it was still easily found by superusers since they could just track the pattern of checkins based on the blue dots.

Late last week foursquare quietly rolled out a change that makes your home much more private — as long as it’s properly categorized. Once categorized as a home, venues now show a message that says: Since this is a home, the exact location is not shared here. This map is of the approximate area.
  • JR1JR1 September 2011
The map pin disappears and the map is centered on a random spot at least one-quarter mile away from the actual location so it’s no longer easy to tell exactly where the house is. The street address is hidden, with only the city, state and zip visible. Even the superuser loophole has been closed; blue checkin dots no longer show up for superusers."
Venue owners and their friends can still see the address and correct pin location when logged in. Users who find that their home is on foursquare but isn’t categorized properly can use the new “Report a Problem” link to report it to foursquare staff and get it categorized properly.

in my family, we are 4sq users... but there is one think I cannot understand.
different account don't behave the same way:
    - we don't have the same amount of max check a day (1 account can check 30 times a day, another 50 a day and another 39 a day.) (we made the test: with iphone 4 & 4S/android galaxy S.. using account on a phone then another, it's really account depending not linked to the type of phone or apps version)
    - we don't have the same amount of max check in 15mn some have 4, some 6 some 8...

    Brand following FAQ's

Q- how many brands can you follow
    A- 1000

Q- After you get a badge can you unfollow the brand and keep the badge
A- Currently Yes, you only need to follow to get the badge then you can unfollow

Q- I have tons of retired badges grayed out in my trophy case, does that mean they will become active again?
A- If a brand has ever had a badge that you did not get and you follow that brand the badge will show up grayed out in your trophy case forever. If you dont want to see them just unfollow the brand
  • vanzvanz November 2011
    Thx @JR1
  • vanzvanz November 2011
@JR1 if my 'home' not categorized home. Can?
And the mayor not my friend, can i make it to 'my home'? And get back mayorship?
  • JR1JR1 November 2011
If you created the venue for your home then you can edit the category and make it a home venue. If you did not create the venue just then follow these instructions from 4sqr:

"If you did not create the venue for your home, go to the venue page on the website and click “Report a Problem” for a list of flagging options. Select “Venue is my home” and choose the best description:"
“I want this venue private to me and my friends”
“This is my home but it is categorized as something else”
“I want to remove my home from foursquare”

As for getting back the mayorship as soon as you checkin more then who ever has the mayorship then you will get it back. Getting the category of the venue changed will not help you with that.
  • vanzvanz November 2011
@JR1 ok. I had report it just now. I try to get my mayor back then. Thankz a lot.
  • jmancil1972 November 2011
If someone was to use GPS spoofing with the official 4 sq app, do you think 4sq would flag their account?
  • JR1JR1 November 2011
There is a chance that they could. I have heard of people getting their accts flagged for using gps spoofs. Some of the programs leave a trail behind that 4sqr looks for and it will get them caught. It is a chance that one takes when using programs like that. They used to not care at all what people did but in the last several months they have cracked down alot. If it were me I would not chance it. The best way to "jump" is 4sqr mobile. 4sqr has stated they will not flag any accts that use 4sqr mobile. Def the safe way to go.
  • JR1JR1 November 2011
    Q. How do I report abuse or harassment?
    A. If you encounter inappropriate tips, shouts, or venues, or if you are being harassed by another user, send us an email at privacy@foursquare.com. Only emails on this subject will be replied to.

Here's what we'll require when you file a report:

-Your foursquare username or user ID
-A detailed description of your issue
    -A link to the foursquare tip(s), venue(s), or user(s) you’re reporting.

Our support team will get back to you within 3 business days. In the meantime, do not engage with or communicate with the user via foursquare tips, venues, or shouts. We also recommend you remove this user as your foursquare friend by going to foursquare.com/manage/friends, mousing over his/her name, and clicking the “x” so he/she won’t be able to see where you’re checking in.
